Southern Chocolate Cobbler

Southern Chocolate Cobbler is a delightful dessert that combines a rich chocolate sauce with a tender cake-like topping.

Ingredients:

For the Chocolate Sauce:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 7 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup melted butter
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the Cobbler Topping:

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup melted butter

Additional:

  • Whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for serving (optional)

Instructions:

1. Preheat the Oven:

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).

2. Prepare the Chocolate Sauce:

  • In a mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 cup of flour, 7 tablespoons of cocoa powder, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Stir in 1/2 cup of milk, 1/3 cup of melted butter, and 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla extract until well combined. The mixture should resemble a thick batter.

3. Prepare the Cobbler Topping:

  • In another mixing bowl, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar, 1 cup of flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt.
  • Stir in 1/2 cup of milk and 1/3 cup of melted butter until well combined. The mixture should resemble a thick batter.

4. Assemble the Cobbler:

  • Pour the chocolate sauce mixture into an ungreased 9×13 inch baking dish or similar sized casserole dish.
  • Spoon the cobbler topping mixture over the chocolate sauce. It will spread somewhat during baking.

5. Bake:

  • Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the cobbler topping is set and springs back lightly when touched.

6. Serve:

  • Once baked, remove the cobbler from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
  • Serve the warm cobbler with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream, if desired.
