Cinnamon Rock Candy

Cinnamon rock candy is a delightful treat that combines the sweetness of candy with the warm, spicy flavor of cinnamon. Here’s a simple recipe for making cinnamon rock candy at home:

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
  • 1 cup (240ml) water
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon extract or 2-3 cinnamon sticks
  • Optional: Red food coloring (a few drops)

Equipment:

  • Clean glass jar or container
  • Wooden skewer or string
  • Clothespin or pencil
  • Clothespin or pencil
  • Plastic wrap or paper towel

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Container:
    • Clean the glass jar or container thoroughly and let it dry completely.
  2. Make the Cinnamon Syrup:
    • In a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Stir well.
    • Heat the mixture over medium-high heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar dissolves completely. This should take about 5-7 minutes.
    • Once the sugar is dissolved, add the cinnamon extract or cinnamon sticks to the mixture.
    • If you want to add a red color to your candy, you can also add a few drops of red food coloring at this stage. Stir to combine.
  3. Cool the Mixture:
    • Remove the saucepan from the heat and let the syrup cool for about 20-30 minutes. It should still be warm but not scalding hot.
  4. Prepare the String or Skewer:
    • While the syrup is cooling, attach a wooden skewer or string to a clothespin or pencil. The skewer or string should be long enough to hang into the jar without touching the sides or bottom.
  5. Dip and Grow the Crystals:
    • Dip the wooden skewer or string into the cinnamon syrup, making sure it’s fully coated.
    • Carefully place the coated skewer or string into the clean glass jar, allowing the excess syrup to drip off. Make sure the skewer or string is suspended in the jar and doesn’t touch the sides or bottom.
    • Cover the top of the jar with plastic wrap or a paper towel to keep dust and debris out.
  6. Let It Grow:
    • Place the jar in a cool, undisturbed location where it won’t be disturbed for about 1-2 weeks. Crystals will gradually form on the skewer or string.
  7. Harvest the Candy:
    • Once you’re satisfied with the size of the crystals, carefully remove the skewer or string from the jar and let it dry for a few minutes.
    • Break or cut the crystals into smaller pieces if desired.
  8. Enjoy Your Cinnamon Rock Candy:
    • Your homemade cinnamon rock candy is ready to enjoy! Store any leftovers in an airtight container to keep them fresh.

Cinnamon rock candy makes a delightful treat or a unique homemade gift. Enjoy the sweet, spicy goodness!
