Fried Apple Pies

Fried apple pies are a delicious treat that can be enjoyed as a dessert or snack. Here’s a simple recipe for making fried apple pies:

Ingredients:

For the Filling:

  • 4 cups peeled, cored, and diced apples (such as Granny Smith)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons butter

For the Dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup shortening
  • 6-8 tablespoons cold water

For Frying:

  • Vegetable oil

For Dusting (Optional):

  • Powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Filling:

a. In a medium saucepan, combine diced apples, sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice. b. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the apples are tender, and the sugar has dissolved. c. Stir in butter and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until the mixture is well combined. d. Remove from heat and let the filling cool.

2. Make the Dough:

a. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. b. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. c. Gradually add cold water, 1 tablespoon at a time, tossing with a fork until the dough comes together. d. Divide the dough into two portions, and roll each portion into a ball. Flatten each ball into a disk, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

3. Assemble the Pies:

a. Roll out one of the dough disks on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thickness. b. Using a round cutter or a glass, cut out circles from the dough. c. Place a spoonful of the cooled apple filling in the center of each dough circle. d. Fold the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Press the edges to seal. e. Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.

4. Fry the Pies:

a. Heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C). b. Carefully place the pies in the hot oil and fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. c. Remove the fried pies and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.

5. Serve:

a. Allow the pies to cool slightly before serving. b. Optionally, dust the fried apple pies with powdered sugar or cinnamon sugar.

Enjoy your homemade fried apple pies!
