Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy

Salisbury steak with onion gravy is a classic comfort food dish that’s both delicious and satisfying. Here’s a recipe to make this dish at home:

Ingredients:

For the Salisbury Steak:

  • 1 pound ground beef (preferably 80% lean)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped mushrooms (optional)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  •  Prepare the Salisbury Steak:
    a. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, chopped mushrooms (if using), egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix all ingredients well.
    b. Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval or rectangular patties, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch thick.
  •  Cook the Salisbury Steak:
    a. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil to prevent sticking.
    b. Add the Salisbury steak patties to the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they are nicely browned and cooked through. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.

  •  Make the Onion Gravy:

1. a. In the same skillet, add the sliced onions and butter. Cook the onions over medium-low heat until they are soft and caramelized, which can take about 15-20 minutes.

2. Sprinkle the flour over the caramelized onions and stir for about 1-2 minutes until the flour is fully incorporated.

3. Slowly pour in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.

4. Bring the mixture to a simmer and let it cook for 5-10 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.

5.Season the gravy with pepper and salt to taste.

Serve:
1. Return the cooked Salisbury steak patties to the skillet, coating them with the onion gravy.
2. Allow everything to simmer together for another 5 minutes to heat the patties thoroughly.

3. Serve the Salisbury steak with onion gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or with your favorite side dishes.

Enjoy your homemade Salisbury steak with onion gravy! This dish pairs well with steamed vegetables or buttered corn
