Poor Man’s Cubed Steak

Poor Man's Cubed Steak

Poor Man’s Cubed Steak, also known as “Salisbury Steak” or “Minute Steak,” is a budget-friendly and delicious dish made from ground beef. Here’s a simple recipe to prepare Poor Man’s Cubed Steak:

Ingredients:

For the Steak:

  • 1 pound ground beef (you can use lean ground beef)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

For the Gravy:

  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Prepare the Meat Mixture:
    • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, egg, finely chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
    • Mix everything together until well combined.
  • Shape the Steaks:
    • Divide the meat mixture into equal portions and shape them into oval patties, similar to the shape of cube steaks.

  • Brown the Steaks:
    • Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil.
    • Brown the shaped patties on both sides until they are nicely seared and cooked through. This will take about 3-4 minutes per side. Once cooked, remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside.
  • Prepare the Gravy:
    • In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and sauté until they are translucent and slightly caramelized.
    • Push the onions to the side of the skillet and add the butter to melt.
    • Sprinkle the flour over the butter and onions, and cook for a minute or two to make a roux.
    • Gradually whisk in the beef broth to the roux, stirring constantly to avoid lumps.
    • Cook the gravy until it thickens and becomes smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste

  • Combine and Bake:
    • Place the browned meat patties in a baking dish.
    • Pour the prepared gravy over the patties, covering them evenly.
  • Bake:
    • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the patties are fully cooked and the flavors have melded.
  • Serve:
    • Remove from the oven and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.
    • Serve the Poor Man’s Cubed Steak over mashed potatoes, rice, or with a side of vegetables.
