DINNER

Foil Packet Sausage and Pierogies

Foil Packet Sausage and Pierogies

Foil Packet Sausage and Pierogies

I made this on a night when I didn’t feel like doing anything fancy, but still wanted an actual dinner that felt warm and satisfying. There was a pack of sausage and a bag of pierogies in the freezer. Nothing fancy, nothing planned. Simple food. Waiting for a purpose. So I decided to let the crock pot do the work.

I sliced the sausage and took a few pieces of foil. I spread out little packets of foil and began to build them up like little dinner parcels. I added pierogies, sausage, a bit of butter and a dash of seasoning to each. I didn’t think much of it. I just wanted everything to cook together and develop flavor as it cooked.” I sealed the packets well and placed them in the slow cooker.

Then I turned away. A few hours later the kitchen smelled rich and savory. The sausage released its flavor, the butter seeped into everything and the pierogies softened and became tender and filled with flavor.

When I opened the packets, everything in there looked like it had cooked itself into a perfect little meal. The sausage was juicy, the pierogies absorbed all the buttery seasoning, and nothing was dry or bland.

I put it straight out of the foil onto plates. No further action. No additional dishes. Simple warm food that tasted like I had put more effort into it than I actually had. That night, people ate fast. And I heard no complaints. That’s generally how I know I should keep a recipe.
