Ingredients:

  • 6 bratwurst sausages

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 1 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 (12 oz) bottle of beer (lager or ale works well)

  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1/2 tsp black pepper

  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)

  • 6 brat buns (optional, for serving)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat Oven – Set to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Caramelize Onions – In a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven, heat butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add onions and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft. Add garlic and cook for another minute.

  3. Add Brats – Nestle the bratwurst into the onions and let them brown slightly, about 2 minutes per side.

  4. Deglaze with Beer – Pour in the beer, scraping up any browned bits from the pan. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, mustard (if using), salt, pepper, and smoked paprika.

  5. Oven Braise – Cover the pan with a lid or foil and transfer to the oven. Bake for 30-40 minutes, flipping the brats halfway through.

  6. Crisp Up (Optional) – For extra flavor, remove the lid and broil for 3-5 minutes until the brats are browned on top.

  7. Serve – Enjoy the brats on buns with caramelized onions or alongside mashed potatoes and sauerkraut.

Note: For the best flavor, use a beer that complements the brats, such as a lager, pilsner, or amber ale. If you prefer a non-alcoholic version, substitute the beer with beef or chicken broth. For extra depth, let the onions caramelize longer before adding the brats. Serve with mustard, sauerkraut, or your favorite toppings for a delicious meal!
