HAMBURGER STEAKS WITH ONION GRAVY

Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy is a delicious and comforting dish that’s easy to prepare. Here’s a simple recipe to guide you through the process:

Ingredients:

For the hamburger steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean is a good option)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onions
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

For the onion gravy:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the hamburger steaks:
  • In a mixing bowl, combine the breadcrumbs and milk. Let them sit for a couple of minutes until the breadcrumbs absorb the milk.
  • Add the ground beef, finely chopped onions, egg, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper to the bowl.
  • Mix all the ingredients thoroughly until well combined. Be careful not to overwork the meat to keep the hamburger steaks tender.
  • Divide the mixture into 4-6 equal portions and shape them into oval-shaped patties, about 1/2 to 3/4-inch thick.
  1. Cook the hamburger steaks:
  • Preheat a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil to the pan.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the hamburger steaks to the pan. Cook them for about 4-5 minutes per side or until they reach your desired level of doneness. You can cook them longer for well-done or slightly less for medium-rare. Set the cooked patties aside on a plate.

  1. Prepare the onion gravy:
  • In the same skillet you used to cook the hamburger steaks, melt the butter over medium heat.
  • Add the thinly sliced onions to the pan and sauté them until they become soft and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well to coat them. Cook for another minute or two to get rid of the raw flour taste.
  • Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper to taste.
  • Bring the gravy to a simmer and let it cook for a few more minutes until it thickens to your desired consistency.
  1. Serve:
  • Place the hamburger steaks on a serving platter and pour the onion gravy over them.
  • This dish pairs well with mashed potatoes, rice, or steamed vegetables. You can also serve it with a side of green beans or a fresh salad.

Enjoy your delicious Hamburger Steaks with Onion Gravy!
