Shepherd’s Pie

Shepherd’s Pie is a delicious and comforting dish made with a savory meat filling topped with mashed potatoes. Here’s a simple recipe to help you prepare Shepherd’s Pie:

  • 1.5 pounds (680g) ground lamb or beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 carrots, peeled and diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 cup beef or vegetable broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes (homemade or store-bought)

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large skillet or frying pan, cook the ground lamb or beef over medium heat until browned. Remove any excess fat if needed.
  3. Add the chopped onion, diced carrots, and minced garlic to the pan. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables have softened.
  4. Stir in the frozen peas, tomato paste, beef or vegetable broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. Simmer the mixture for 10-15 minutes until the liquid has reduced slightly and the flavors have melded together. Adjust the seasonings if necessary.
  5. Transfer the meat mixture to a greased baking dish or individual ramekins if you prefer individual servings.
  6. Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top of the meat mixture, creating a smooth layer.

  1. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for approximately 25-30 minutes or until the mashed potatoes are golden and the filling is bubbling around the edges.
  2. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Shepherd’s Pie is a versatile dish, so feel free to customize it according to your taste. You can add other vegetables like corn or green beans to the filling, or sprinkle some grated cheese on top of the mashed potatoes before baking. Enjoy your homemade Shepherd’s Pie!
