Filipino Lumpia

Filipino Lumpia is a delicious and popular Filipino appetizer or snack that resembles spring rolls. It typically consists of a mixture of ground meat, vegetables, and seasonings, wrapped in a thin wrapper and then deep-fried until golden and crispy. Here’s a recipe to help you prepare Filipino Lumpia:


  • 1 lb ground pork or chicken
  • 1 medium-sized carrot, julienned
  • 1 medium-sized onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup cabbage, finely shredded
  • 1 cup green beans, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup bean sprouts (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • Lumpia wrappers (spring roll wrappers)
  • Cooking oil for frying

Dipping Sauce:

  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Chili flakes or chopped chili (optional)


  1. In a large pan or skillet, heat some oil over medium heat. Add the garlic and onions, and sauté until fragrant.
  2. Add the ground pork or chicken to the pan and cook until browned and cooked through. Break up any large chunks with a spoon or spatula.
  3. Add the carrots, green beans, and cabbage to the pan. Stir-fry for a few minutes until the vegetables are slightly tender.
  4. If using bean sprouts, add them to the pan and stir-fry for another minute. Bean sprouts cook quickly, so you don’t want to overcook them.
  5. Season the mixture with soy sauce, fish sauce (if using), and ground black pepper. Adjust the seasoning according to your taste preferences. Stir well to combine all the ingredients. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool.
  6. To assemble the Lumpia, place a lumpia wrapper on a clean surface. Spoon about 2 tablespoons of the filling onto the lower part of the wrapper.
  7. Fold the bottom part of the wrapper over the filling, tuck in the sides, and roll it tightly, like a burrito. Dab a little water on the top edge of the wrapper to seal it.
  8. Continue filling and rolling the lumpia until you use up all the filling or wrappers.
  9. In a deep pan or pot, heat enough oil for deep-frying over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot, carefully add a few lumpia rolls at a time, seam side down.
  10. Fry the lumpia until golden brown and crispy, turning them occasionally for even cooking. This usually takes about 3-4 minutes per side.
  11. Once cooked, remove the lumpia from the oil and drain on a paper towel to remove excess oil.
  12. Repeat the frying process until all the lumpia rolls are cooked.
  13. For the dipping sauce, combine the soy sauce, vinegar, minced garlic, sugar, and chili flakes (if desired) in a small bowl. Stir well to dissolve the sugar.
  14. Serve the lumpia hot with the dipping sauce on the side.

Filipino Lumpia is best enjoyed fresh and hot. You can serve it as an appetizer, snack, or as part of a meal. Enjoy!
