Amish Onion Fritters

Here’s a recipe for Amish Onion Fritters:

Ingredients:

  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup cornmeal
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

  • Instructions:
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, cornmeal, baking powder, salt, black pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well to combine all the dry ingredients.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and egg until well combined.
  3. Pour the milk and egg mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until a thick batter forms.
  4. Add the thinly sliced onions to the batter and mix until all the onions are coated.
  5. In a deep saucepan or Dutch oven, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches about 350°F (175°C).
  6. Using a spoon or tongs, carefully drop spoonfuls of the onion batter into the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Fry the fritters in batches, if necessary.

  1. Cook the fritters for about 2-3 minutes per side, or until they turn golden brown and crispy. Flip them halfway through the cooking process to ensure even browning.
  2. Once cooked, remove the fritters from the oil using a slotted spoon and transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  3. Repeat the frying process with the remaining batter until all the fritters are cooked.
  4. Serve the Amish Onion Fritters warm as a delicious appetizer or side dish. You can also accompany them with dipping sauces like ranch dressing or ketchup, if desired.
