Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chopped pecans (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F. Grease a 15×10 inch baking sheet with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add in the water and cocoa powder and stir until smooth.
  4. Pour the melted butter mixture into the dry ingredients and stir until well combined.
  5. Add in the eggs, buttermilk, and vanilla extract and stir until the batter is smooth.
