Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 medium-sized potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 cup grated cheddar cheese

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt the butter.
  3. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and translucent, but not browned.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir until the flour is well combined with the butter.
  5. Gradually pour in the milk, stirring constantly, until the mixture is smooth.
  6. Add the salt and pepper, and continue to cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes.

  1. Remove the skillet from heat.
  2. In a greased 9-inch (23cm) baking dish, arrange a layer of sliced potatoes, slightly overlapping each other.
  3. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes, spreading it evenly.
  4. Add another layer of potatoes, and pour the remaining sauce over them.
  5. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  6. Remove the foil, sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese over the top, and return to the oven.
  7. Bake uncovered for another 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and the potatoes are tender.
  8. Let the scalloped potatoes cool for a few minutes before serving.
