Ingredients:

For the cake:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/3 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups powdered sugar

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 13×18 inch baking sheet.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the water and cocoa powder, and whisk until the mixture is smooth and heated through.

  1. Pour the melted butter mixture over the flour mixture, and stir until everything is well combined.
  2. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, then add the buttermilk and vanilla extract. Mix until everything is well incorporated.
