If you grew up in the 1970s, you likely saw this dessert at parties or at home when your family was hosting dinner. Maybe you had the opportunity to make it yourself? Known by many names, including Heartthrob Robert Redford, this layered dessert is rich, creamy, and unflattering, but very easy to put together. Although it is difficult to determine how the name came about, the dish is also known as “Robert Redford Fudge”, “Robert Redford’s Next Best Thing” and “Better Than Sex”. Rich in sin, this dessert is like a delectable chocolate fudge, with layers of cream cheese, a whipped topping, and two types of pudding on a short baked crust.
Easily adapting to your taste, this layered dessert is very indulgent. You can use any flavor of pudding you like, but nothing beats the combination of vanilla and chocolate with cream. Many of the toppings work well, and there are no restrictions on how much or how little you can use on top. Top it with any crunchy layer you like, like nuts, baby chocolate truffles, or dark or white chocolate chips.
This is a great dessert to make the day before, and it also makes great leftovers – if you are lucky enough to leave some – as the scones get better with time. Keep in the refrigerator, covered, for up to four days.
